Quarantine Officer at NZ Ministry for Primary Industries

Kōrero mō te Tūranga – About the Role
Our Quarantine Officers are highly trained, every-day New Zealanders doing an extraordinary job for their country. We work to ensure that cargo and passengers entering New Zealand are free of biosecurity risk. Officers work on a rotational roster that offers them a breadth of work as they lead New Zealand’s biosecurity system at the front line – international airports, ports, mail centres, and cargo facilities.
We are recruiting now for our next cohort of Quarantine Officers to start 11th September 2023.

Mōu – About You

  • We’re looking for passionate, self-motivatedpeople who enjoy a range of tasks, worksites and varied work.
  • You will be fit and healthy as you will be standing for periods of time.
  • Working indoors and sometimes outdoors will appeal to you.
  • You will have strong communication skills (oral and written) and ability to create strong relationships with stakeholders.
  • You have a high level of computer literacy.
  • An interest or qualification in agriculture, horticulture, forestry, botany, or environmental science.
  • You may have work experience in a life science or similar industry
  • You must hold a full NZ drivers license

Mō tō mātou Rōpū – About the Team
The Border Clearance Services Directorate within the Biosecurity New Zealand branch helps protect New Zealand’s natural environment, primary industries and people against exotic pests and diseases. It is accountable for ensuring the delivery of sustainable and effective frontline biosecurity clearance services at the border for imported goods, craft, mail, passengers, crew and transitional facilities.

The application process will include the completion of an online application, online questionnaire and uploading of your CV and cover letter, so please allow approximately 30 minutes to submit your application. If you are successful in progressing through to the assessment centre, you will also need to provide a copy of the Ishihara Eye Test at that stage– more information can be found on our website below.
**Please note, there is a 12-month stand-down period if you have attended the Quarantine Officer Assessment previously**
**If successful in application process, you must be able to attend the assessment centre on either 25th or 26th July 2023 and if offered the position, you must be able to start on 11th September 2023.
