THE POSITION
Under supervision of a Cafeteria Manager, or Cafeteria Supervisor in the Adult School, performs routine tasks in the serving and selling of food.

CURRENT OPENING: There are currently multiple part-time openings at various schools. Individuals in this job typically work between 3 hours and 3.75 hours per day, for 10 months a year. Salary placement will be on Range 5 of the CSEA Salary Schedule “B.” Initial salary placement for new employees is at step 3 ($16.13 per hour) of this salary range.

APPLICANT FILING INFORMATION: This recruitment is open to the public. An eligibility list will be established to fill vacancies for full time, part time, evening, summer, and substitute positions throughout the duration of the eligibility list. Eligibility lists typically last for six months. Vacant positions are filled from the top three ranks. Pursuant to PC Rule 6.2.10, the eligibility list established for this recruitment may be used for another related classification at the same or lower salary.

Essential Duties

 

  • Transports and positions food for serving.
  • Washes pots, pans, trays, utensils, and other equipment.
  • Assists in the cleaning of the kitchen equipment and serving areas.
  • Replenishes condiments and supplies for the serving areas.
  • Keeps records of food and beverages sold.
  • May help to prepare food in larger kitchens.
  • Maintains safe and sanitary serving areas, facilities, and equipment.
  • Performs cashiering duties.

OTHER RELATED DUTIES

  • Keeps records of items on hand.
  • Distributes lunch tickets.
  • Uses a variety of kitchen tools and appliances.
  • Orders and stocks supplies.
  • Performs other related duties as directed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Employees in this classification stand, walk, lift and carry up to 25 lbs. (most positions occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.), stoop/bend, repetitively use fingers and wrists and/or hands in a twisting motion or while applying pressure, simultaneously use both hands or both legs, have rapid mental/muscular coordination, speak clearly, hear well, have depth perception, see small details well.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Employees in this classification work inside exclusively, with their hands in water, in direct contact with students and staff. Protective equipment required: Gloves and hairnet.

Minimum Qualifications

Training and Experience: No education or experience required.

Special Requirement: Food Handler certificate approved by the state of California is desirable.

Ideal candidates will have

Ability to:

  • Learn and adhere to health, sanitation, and safety laws and regulations;
  • Work quickly and efficiently;
  • Use kitchen tools and appliances safely;
  • Prepare simple reports;
  • Handle money and make change accurately;
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

COVID Vaccine Requirement
Per Board policy, employees are allowed on District campuses or facilities only if they are fully vaccinated. This resolution applies to all applicants upon hire. Applicants are required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination status to the Personnel Commission Office on the date of the examination. Applicants will not be allowed to take the examination without being fully vaccinated. People are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after completion of two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

General Information
The screening process for this position, which may be subject to modification, will include some form of an application screening, initial screening of qualifications, documentation/certification screening, and in some instances supplemental application screening. The stated qualifications for the position represent only the minimum requirements and do not guarantee qualification for examination or placement on an eligibility list.

The examination may consist of any combination of the following: training and experience evaluation, written knowledge test, hands on/performance test, structured panel interview, situational judgement interview, or other type of exam of fitness for duty. All parts of the examination process are job related. A passing score must be attained on each portion of the exam to advance to the next stage and ultimate placement on the eligibility list, which depending on the classification, may be in force for six months or one year.

Paid Holidays

Up to 16 holidays per year depending on months worked for all classified employees.

Paid Vacation
Vacation is prorated for all classified employees, based on the hours and months worked per year. Below is the vacation schedule for classified supervisors and classified staff.

Classified Employee Vacation Chart
1-5 years of service

  • One day of vacation will be earned per month worked.

6-10 years of service

  • One and one-quarter (1 ¼) days of vacation will be earned per month worked.

11-15 years of service

  • One and one-half (1 ½) days of vacation will be earned per month worked.

16-20 years of service

  • One and three-fourths (1 ¾) days of vacation will be earned per month worked.

21 + years of service

  • Two (2) days of vacation will be earned per month worked.

Health Benefits
For positions 35 hours or more per week the District contributes $11,900 (subject to change) toward annual premium for medical, dental, vision and life insurance coverage. Partially paid benefits are available for part-time (20-34) hour employees. The District participates in the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS). Lifetime retirement benefits provided for eligible retirees.

District Benefit Providers:

The following benefit providers are available for enrollment for eligible employees.

  • Medical: Kaiser, United Health Care PPO/HMO
  • Dental: Delta Dental (PPO) or DeltaCare USA (HMO)
  • Vision: Vision Service Plan (VSP)
  • Out of pocket costs are dependent on which provider is selected. Each provider has a different annual premium.

Paid Sick Leave
Every regular classified employee, probationary or permanent, can earn paid sick leave credit(s) based on one day for each month in which such employees are in a paid status with the District. Earned, but unused sick leave can accumulate without limit. Full-time classified employees (those who work 8 hours per day, 5 days per week and 12 months per year) will normally earn twelve (12) days of sick leave credit(s) during each fiscal year.
