Maintenance Worker – Eco-Center at The City of Spruce Grove

Position Overview:

The Maintenance Worker Eco Centre will perform functions with a focus on environmental responsibility, safety and customer service. It is expected that the Maintenance Worker Eco Centre will provide an optimal customer service while guiding facility users in proper use of the facility. Some off site work will be required as well.

Employees in this position perform semi-skilled manual work, operate vehicles, operate minor equipment and perform minor book keeping in accomplishing all operations and maintenance tasks required to deliver the prescribed programs and services in the operation of the City of Spruce Grove Eco Centre. This position reports to the Waste Management Lead.

This is a full-time, temporary position.

Responsibilities:

Customer Service

  • Greet and educate facility users on the proper use of the services offered at the facility and the traffic circulation in effect.
  • Inform all facility users of the policy and rate structure pertaining to site User Fees.
  • Collection of appropriate fees as per the established fee schedules.
  • Sort Household Hazardous Waste materials as required to maintain proper storage and disposal.
  • Complete materials disposal preparation as required for specific materials as they are received from the facility users.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a polite and courteous manner.
  • Provide information for facility users to enable proper recycling and disposal.
  • Resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Develop and maintain ongoing positive working relationships internally with various City departments.
  • Provide positive leadership to less experienced Eco Centre staff.
  • Assist in the determination of appropriate responses to inquiries and common complaints.
  • Provide required assistance or solutions to address issues as they are encountered.
  • Monitor contractors working on site to ensure they are working safely and that their work is to the City’s specifications.

Program Execution and Development

  • Daily routine inspection and minor maintenance of tools equipment and/or vehicles.
  • Carry out assigned tasks in accordance with all regulatory and guidance documents.
  • Conduct surveys and gather statistics as requested by the supervisor.
  • Complete reports related to facility use.
  • Coordinate shipping and receiving of materials to final disposal.
  • Verify the quantities of materials sent from the Eco Centre.
  • Prepare and verify manifests, waybills and invoices as may be required.
  • Receipt, inventory, construction, delivery, and repair of new residential waste carts.
  • Collection and replacement of damaged carts.
  • Dismantling of collected carts and preparing them for shipment to recycle facility.
  • Facility maintenance, operation, and cleaning.
  • Participate in site safety inspections.
  • Provide data for operations records and reports as requested by supervisor.
  • Participate in the planning and execution of facility program operations procedures.
  • Ensure equipment and vehicles are maintained in a clean condition.
  • Operate small equipment as provided to maintain materials control and facility organization.
  • Ensure yard and buildings and collection bins areas of the facility are clean an organized.
  • Provide manual labor to handle materials disposal and maintain yard and facility cleanliness.
  • Assist facility users in disposal and recycling materials management while on site.
  • Assist with all assignments related to solid waste and recycle program operations.

Other

  • Understand and adhere to City policies, procedures and standards, whether written or implied, as amended from time to time.
  • Contribute to a positive safety culture by acting in a safe manner at all times.
  • Provide leadership for Health and Safety by making every reasonable effort to ensure the health and safety of staff within the section.
  • Assist in the development City safety policies.
  • Work in accordance with Alberta Occupational Health & Safety Regulations and City of Spruce Grove Safe Work Practices and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Complete training and development provided to improve or increase individual competencies related to position responsibilities.
  • Act as a steward of the City’s Corporate Culture through empowerment and support to staff.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience in the area of customer service.
  • Working knowledge of recycling operations.
  • Previous experience in the collection of payments and user fees.
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Motor Vehicle Operator’s License is mandatory. Drivers abstract will be required.
  • Refrigerant removal certification is an asset and will be required. (May be obtained after employment begins.)
